Conscious Breathing
In today’s world, with so many uncertainties and challenges, it’s easy to find ourselves overwhelmed by worry. We often ponder what we could have done differently to prevent current circumstances or stress about what the future holds. These thoughts can make the world seem topsy-turvy.
In these moments of reflection, I remind myself that I have a choice. At any given moment, I can pause and observe where my mind is wandering. If I find myself dwelling on past events, I ask, “Is this useful?” If I’m preoccupied with future worries, I question, “Is this helpful?” This act of noticing pulls me back into the present, bringing a sense of relief, contentment, and even a touch of joy.
Recently, I’ve been exploring a simple yet profound method shared by the beloved Buddhist monk, Thich Nhat Hanh, in his book Peace is Every Step.
Try Conscious Breathing…
- Find a comfortable place to sit.
- Close your eyes.
- Begin to notice your breath.
- As you inhale, silently say to yourself:
“Breathing in, I know that I am breathing in.” - As you exhale, say:
“Breathing out, I know that I am breathing out.”
Repeat this for ten breaths, using your fingers to keep count. Once you feel comfortable with ten rounds, set a timer for 5 or 10 minutes and continue the practice. Experiment with the duration and see what feels best for you.
This simple practice anchors us in the present moment, offering a respite from the mental clutter that often accompanies daily life. As you integrate this into your routine, observe the shifts in your mindset and the calmness it brings.
